Treekind®

Treekind® is a patented plant-based alternative to leather that is completely free of plastic. Made from a formulation of lignocellulose from fallen tree leaves and an algae binder, Treekind® is an ultra-low resource material that is not only recyclable, but also home-compostable.

SUSTAINABILITY

100% Plastic Free

Treekind® is made with lignocellulosic feedstocks from urban parks and gardens and inedible agricultural feedstock.

Treekind®’s production uses less than 0.1% of the water in equivalent to leather processing and has a very low carbon footprint.

MANUFACTURING

Applications

Treekind® is a fantastic alternative to leather for watch straps, packaging, jewellery, fashion accessories (such as wallets, small "leather" goods), belts and trims on footwear.

Furniture, apparel, footwear (uppers), automotive, and aviation applications are all under development. If you would like to fast-track a development in these areas, we offer Research and Development services. Click here for more information.

The standard thickness of Treekind® is 1.0 mm (± 0.2 mm). Upon request, the material can be tuned to accommodate a range of thicknesses between 0.6-1.6 mm.

FINISHES

Colours & Textures

Treekind® is available in black, with other colours (e.g. brown, green and red) available intermittently, depending on our production schedule.

The standard Treekind® texture is a smooth, satin finish, however we work with a range of embossment papers and can offer a range of textures upon request.

We always welcome the possibility of developing new colours and textures. Please contact us for more information.

Sustainability

Life Cycle Analysis

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) quantify the environmental impacts of products and services.

Treekind®'s Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) was conducted by environmental consultants, Valpak, in early 2024.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS

ISO Testing

Treekind® has been tested against a wide range of ISO tests for leather goods.

The material delivers good results for tensile, elongation, flex, double edge tear, water spotting, UV, colour fastness, and chemical analyses.

Treekind® has been tested repeatedly in mechanical and surface ISO tests.

CERTIFICATIONS

Green-waste, not wood

We're often asked whether Treekind® is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified.

Treekind® is made very intentionally from green-waste streams - not wood - so the FSC certification is happily not necessary.
