What is Treekind®?
Treekind® is an innovative, low-resource material that is often used as an alternative to leather. Treekind® is developed by UK-based Materials Science company, Biophilica.
Treekind® is made by combining fallen tree leaves (lignocellulosic feedstock) with a natural binder. It is fully biodegradable and can be home composted.
What certifications does Treekind® have?
Treekind has the following certifications:
- 100% biobased by the USDA's BioPreferred Program.
- 100% vegan by PETA (Navigate to "Vegan Leather" then "+ See the full list of suppliers")
How does Treekind® compare to other leather alternatives?
Treekind® has been ranked the #2 leather alternative in the world by Ecocult.

Does Treekind® contain any plastic, phthalates, PFAs, synthetic dyes or hazardous chemicals?
No. Our full ISO chemical analysis demonstrates that these substances are not present in Treekind®. In addition, no formaldehyde, VOCs, nor pesticides were detected.
Does Treekind® have a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)?
Yes, Treekind® has been assessed in an scoping Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) by Valpak in 2024.

What kind of pigments are used in Treekind®?
The materials have various natural colours that are retained in some samples. We also use plant pigments as well as non-toxic natural pigments.
In which colours is Treekind® available?
At present, Treekind® is available in black.
Brown, green and red are available intermittently, depending on our production schedule.
We always welcome the possibility of developing new colours. Please contact us for more information.
How can I obtain samples of Treekind®?
A5 and A4 swatches of Treekind® are now available to purchase.

Does Treekind® have FSC certification?
As Treekind® does not use wood, the material does not require FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification.
How long does Treekind® take to biodegrade?
Water droplets will not start the biodegradation of Treekind®. Rather, the material begins to breakdown only when introduced to the compost.
Treekind® has passed the test for home composting (ISO 14855), with 97% of the material biodegrading in 281 days.
