HYPE x IET x TREEKIND

Biophilica has partnered up with clothing and accessories brand HYPE. and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in launching the Engineering a Better Future: Backpack to the Future competition.

The competition pioneers a campaign aimed at changing perceptions of science and engineering, particularly in the relationship of fashion and STEM. This further highlighting the necessity of a sustainable fashion future.

Children, aged 5-13, will submit their designs of a backpack displaying their vision of how it can help the environment, either via special features, gadget or properties. The winning design will be made into HYPE. Backpack prototype.

As a part of the launch of the campaign the world’s first biodegradable backpack was made. It was made from Treekind, Biophilica’s material, which makes the backpack complitely plastic free and biodegradable. Launching the competition in the autumn it should be highlighted that the batch of Treekind material that was used in the production has been manufactured from autumn leaves, maintaining Biophilica’s value of sourcing local.

Biophilica’s founder, Mira Nameth, is honored to be asked to join the judging panel choosing the winning design. She will be joined by HYPE. Co-founders Bav Samani and Liam Green alongside Dr Ciara McGrath and Professor Danielle George from the IET*.

At Biophilica we are delighted to partner up with such esteemed brands and organisations, particularly when it comes to promoting sustainability, stem and creativity.
